LogoHere at Chelmer Valley High School we devote time, energy and resources to ensure the education we provide enables all students to have the widest opportunities and choices available to them at every stage of their education. We believe that all students should be provided with a challenging and tailored education designed to help them achieve their highest level possible.  This differentiation encompasses our more able students.  We believe that each student has the right to be stretched and challenged in their education; this is a true for those students who are more able, as it is for any other.

With this as are aim, we are launching our new exciting EAQ programme which empowers high achieving students throughout their journey in secondary education. The EAQ Programme will enable these students to experience opportunities beyond our already broad and balanced curriculum. It has not been designed to replace our broad and balanced curriculum, which is already based soundly on stretch and challenge and differentiation for all abilities; rather the aim is to add further enrichment through opportunities outside of the classroom.

What is the aim of the EAQ Programme?

The EAQ programme is a bespoke pathway for top attaining students at Chelmer Valley High School. This programme  has been designed for Key Stage 3 students but will expand into Key Stage 4. It is hoped that these students will then transfer onto our Aspire programme at Key Stage 5.

The programme is designed to support, challenge and inspire our more able students by creating a culture of raising aspirations, to give them the best possible chance of achieving their potential at Chelmer Valley High School and beyond.

What does the EAQ Programme offer?

The EAQ programme is packed full of amazing opportunities to raise aspirations. By starting in Year 7 students will have maximum time throughout their school years to broaden their horizons, generate motivation to succeed, and explore their future. Through the EAQ programme, students will be provided with opportunities that will:

  • Stretch and challenge them
  • Develop their employability skills
  • Explore their career and educational pathways
  • Allow them to visit Russell Group/Oxbridge universities

Who is the programme for?

Year 7

In Year 7, students who are ranked in the top 10% of their year group in terms of their SAT’s results will be invited to join the programme. They will go through a selection process whereby students will write a letter of application and be interviewed. Successful candidates will then begin the programme.

We recognise SAT’s results give a snapshot of a student’s educational journey and thus we will regularly review our more able students through the year. To remain part of the programme, EAQ students will need to consistently meet the expectations outlined in the introduction session and continue to strive for the best. The programme is supportive, therefore if there begins to be a decline in attainment or attitude, targeted intervention will be put in place to encourage and support students to meet their full potential.

Can students join the programme at a later date if not selected in Year 7?

Yes! There are several points each year whereby the programme is reviewed, and students may be offered the opportunity to join the programme if they have been consistently demonstrating the skills and attitude, we expect from our EAQ students.

Years 8 and 9

Students will be selected using both prior attainment and current attainment across all subjects particular in the core subjects of Maths, English, Science, MFL and the Humanities. Through this method, additional students may be offered a place on the EAQ Programme. This acts as an incentive for all students to achieve the very best results.

Creating Future Leaders – Student Leadership

Leadership is a key skill we want to develop in our highflyers. All highflyers in Year 7-9 will work towards gaining leadership qualifications.

What are our expectations of EAQ students?

Below is a list of characteristics that we believe form part of our EAQ students:

  • Enjoy learning demonstrated by a good attitude to learning in the classroom.
  • Producing high levels of attainment in all subjects particularly Maths, English, Science, MFL and the Humanities.
  • Be intensely curious about the world around them particularly in subjects where their strengths lie.
  • The ability to process new information with great speed.
  • A thirst to continually develop their knowledge and understanding.
  • Engage in deep questioning and thought-provoking discussion.
  • Relate well to their peers and adults and work well in groups.
  • Work with increasing levels of independence.

What will EAQ students be expected to do as part of the programme?

EAQ students will be expected to complete the following to graduate:

  • Complete a subject EAQ task each term over the year.
  • Take part in at least one competition over the year.
  • Be part of the school’s leadership programme.
  • Participate in EAQ workshops delivered by both CVHS staff and external visitors.
  • Meet as a EAQ group twice a term.
  • Participate in EAQ trips that will take place through the programme.

EAQ Subject Tasks

Below are links to the EAQ subject tasks that students select and complete through the year. Students will choose one task to complete and submit each term. Students can select any task from a subject of their choice within their Year group folder. Students are also welcome to complete more than one task a term it is entirely their choice.

Year 7 - Subject Tasks

Year 8 - Subject Tasks

Year 9 - Subject Tasks

How will we recognise our EAQ student achievements?

At the end of the year EAQ students will attend a graduation celebration event. At the event students will present their three tasks that they completed over the year to external professionals. They will then be awarded their graduation certificates for that year. Those that graduate will automatically be given a place in the EAQ programme in the following year.
